  1. Sounds like a great workshop, Ali. I don’t read much historical fiction but I do like Sarah Dunant’s writing. And the only time I’ve tried an historical slant myself, it was about mediaeval nuns – definitely under her influence!
    I’m interested in this point about the paradox, especially the way that readers require both similarities and differences. I think this applies to most fiction really, people want something new but not to be taken too far out of their comfort zone. Sounds like you wish the discussion could have gone on longer.

      Yes it was only a two-hour event which started a bit late – and I had to leave to catch a train! It was probably long enough as a discussion, but I would have liked a bit more opportunity to look at some specific topics. Stilll inspiring in its way. I loved SD’s In the Company of the Courtesan. I like historical fiction but don’t really think of it as a separate genre. – ?
